What is a life insurance paramed exam?
All competitive life insurance companies require a brief paramed exam to be conducted. The exam is done by a third party company and is paid for by the life insurance company. There is no cost to you as the consumer.
We typically use Portamedic or EMSI for our paramed exams.

After you have chosen a life insurance company to apply to, we are going to contact you to review the underwriting questions and life insurance underwriting guidelines so that you are aware of the cutoffs that determine your life insurance rate.
Below are some of the best tips we have discovered in our experience.
Simple steps to take that will give you the best possible results on your paramed exam:
-
Fast for at least 8 hours prior to your exam unless you are diabetic or have another health issue. Some paramed examiners may tell you that this is not necessary, but they need to get their appointments done...Make sure you fast!
-
Insist on morning appointments only. Blood pressure and exam results tend to be better first thing in the morning. Many examiners are available on Saturdays as well.
-
If you are sick on the day of your exam, cancel it, especially if you just had the flu, or swine flu. We can always reschedule it when you are better.
-
Take your medications as you normally would.
-
Avoid alcohol use for a minimum of 24 hours prior to your exam. Blood pressure, liver enzymes and more may be affected.
-
If you smoke, do not smoke for a minimum of 8 hours prior to your exam. Smoking raises blood pressure. For cigar smokers life insurance, some of the companies will require that no nicotine is in your system...which means you will need to stop for 7-10 days prior. We will tell you the rules for the life insurance company you apply to.
-
Your weight - Check your weight in the days leading up to your exam. The last thing you want to do is pay 20% more for missing the cutoff by 1 pound. Take your shoes off, don't wear a belt, empty your pockets, wear light clothing, etc.. IMPORTANT - When the examiner weighs you, ask what they came up with. If you think it is wrong ask them to check it again. Build is a critical factor in determining your life insurance rate, especially if you are trying for the life insurance company's best rates!
-
Your height - Stand up straight just like Mom told you to. Ask the examiner what height they came up with. If you think it is wrong ask them to measure you again.
-
Avoid Caffeine on the day of your exam. Caffeine elevates your blood pressure.
-
Cholesterol TIP - Eat plenty of oatmeal and bananas for the week prior to your exam and lay off the sweets and other cholesterol raising foods.
-
Exercise TIP - If you exercise, do NOT exercise on the morning of your exam. Exercise will raise your blood pressure and may give you elevated liver enzymes results.
-
Water - Drink lots of it and flush out your system for the week prior to your exam.
Life Insurance companies do not give you a second chance when it comes to paramed exams. If you miss one of the cutoffs above when applying for the most competitive rates, you will not get that rate in most cases. You will need to pay a higher rate or we will need to move you to a new company to try again. We can always reschedule a paramed exam for any reason if you are not ready....no big deal at all. We want you to get the best rate possible based on your health.
