Crohn's Disease Life Insurance Quote

Crohn's disease is a form of inflamatory bowel disease that affects the intestines.  Life insurance underwriting of Crohn's disease will depend on the severity of Crohn's disease.

Another form of inflamatory bowel disease that is covered in another section of our site is ulcerative colitis

While life insurance underwriting for Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis are similar, this section deals with Crohn's disease.

What Do Underwriters Look for when Underwriting Crohn's?

What to expect from life insurance underwriting:

When life insurance underwriters look at Crohn's disease, they are looking at the severity of your crohn's.

Most life insurance companies will postpone you for the first 6 months after diagnosis of crohn's.  After the initial postpone period, underwriters look for the following:

Single Flare-up - No Additional symptoms or treatment

6 - 12 months since flare-up - It may be possible to obtain life insurance at "standard table 2-4 range" Each table rating adds approximately 25% the standard rate, and the most likely range would be a table 2-4. Table Rating Information.

12 - 36 months since flare-up - It may be possible to obtain life insurance at the "standard - standard table 2 range"

Greater than 36 months - Standard life insurance rates may be available.

Mild - Moderate Crohn's disease:

Is characterized as mild abdominal pain, mild bleeding, mild diarrhea.  Steroid use if any is for short period of time.  No history of surgery.

In addition, life insurance underwriters look at your age.  If you were diagnosed with Crohn's prior to age 45 rates will be more expensive than those diagnosed at older ages....some companies will use age 40 for this cutoff.

If diagnosed prior to age 45, life insurance may be available at the standard table 4-6 range.

If diagnosed after age 45, life insurance may be available at the standard table 3-4 range.

Keep in mind that these are general guidelines and that your life insurance rate will depend on your specific medical history.

Severe Crohn's disease:

Hospitalizations, frequent diarrhea and bleeding, weight loss of 10% or more, frequent use of steroids, surgeries, history of inflamation of joints, skin, kidneys, liver, etc.

Life insurance underwriting for severe Crohn's disease is on a case by case basis.  Life insurance rates when available will tend to start in the standard table 6 range or higher.

If there is any evidence of dysplasia on biopsies, or sclerosing cholangitis, traditional life insurance companies will decline you.  It may be possible to obtain a "guaranteed issue" type of life insurance policy depending on your age and state of residence.
