EKG and ECG Life Insurance:

EKG stands for electrocardiogram.  You may have also heard the term ECG used.  An ECG is also an electrocardiogram and means the same thing as EKG.

Many people experience an EKG for the first time when they are applying for life insurance.

When Do Life Insurance Companies Require an EKG?

Every life insurance company has its own set of underwriting requirements, and not every life insurance company is the same.

Your age and the amount of life insurance you are requesting will determine if an EKG will be required.

EKG Overview:

An EKG records the electrical activity of your heart.  It is a very common life insurance underwriting requirement.

EKG are resting tests and only take a few minutes to complete when performed as part of your life insurance paramed exam.

The paramed examiner will bring their portable EKG machine to your home or office, connect it to your chest and run the EKG.  Typically this part of the paramed exam takes a few minutes, it doesn't hurt, and you don't feel anything when examiner is completing the ekg.

The ECG is sent to the life insurance underwriters and they will do an EKG interpretation of the test to determine if it is normal or not.

Abnormal EKG:

You may hear back from the life insurance company that they are charging you more money than expected or worse in some cases the life insurance company may decline to offer you life insurance due to an abnormal ekg.

Don't panic, irregular EKG's happen on a regular basis and we have seen more than a few people learn about their irregular heartbeats, bundle branch block, etc. from a paramed exam EKG.

If this does happen to you, the first thing we do is get you a copy of the ECG test results so that you can bring them to your own doctor.

It's important that you bring the results to your own physician and get them checked.  Many times the EKG issue may be minor but it needs to be addressed before you can move forward with life insurance.

Typically what happens next is that your physician will run their own EKG and if they feel that there may be an issue, will schedule you for a more thorough cardiac workup.

Once you have had a checkup with your physician, we can resubmit the follow-up information to the life insurance company for reconsideration.

If there is an underlying heart problem, we can revisit multiple life insurance companies.

Another heart issue we encounter as a result of ekg results are bundle branch blocks.

What to Expect from Life Insurance Underwriters:

The paramed examiner will submit your ekg as well as blood, urine samples to the life insurance company along with the medical questions you answered.

You should always request a copy of your paramed exam results and copy of your ekg.  Your insurance agent should be able to help you with this.

If you need term life insurance, universal life insurance or whole life insurance, we can help you.

LifeInsuranceAdvisors is the #1 source for impaired risk life insurance underwriting, and know how to work with you based on your EKG results.
