Foreign Travel Overview:

Life insurance companies are willing to consider you for life insurance if you travel to foreign countries for pleasure or business, provided you fit within the life insurance companies foreign travel underwriting guidelines.

The primary concern for life insurance underwriters is your future travel...Where are you traveling for the next 12 months?

Depending on the type of travel and locations you travel to, life insurance underwriters may want to know more about past travel locations, trip durations, and purpose of trips.

In the U.S. state insurance departments have weighed in on foreign travel, and laws have been passed in some states that dictate what information may be used by a life insurance company to determine your life insurance rates.

Life Insurance Questionnaire

Foreign Travel Life Insurance Underwriting:

  • Life insurance companies classify countries into A,B,C or D category.  "A" countries are considered to be the countries of least concern, with "D" countries being the most risky.
  • Life insurance underwriters want to know how much time you will spend traveling, and if traveling to multiple destinations, the underwriter will want to know how much time in each country.
  • What is the purpose of your travel?  If you travel for business or pleasure, that is typically ok.  If you travel for mission work, police or security work, government, etc.. coverage availability is on a case by case basis with most life insurance companies.
  • Amount of Travel - Most life insurance companies have guidelines that indicate the number of weeks per year that you can travel and still be considered for life insurance.

Foreign Travel - Country Classifications

  • "A" Countries - You can typically travel to "A" countries for 6 months out of the year and many life insurance companies will offer their best life insurance rates if you qualify.  An example of an "A" risk country would be United Kingdom, France, Germany, Japan, Italy, United Arab Emirates, etc..
  • "B" Countries - The amount of time you spend in a "B" country is one of the more important underwriting factors.  Some companies allow up to 12 weeks per year in the foreign country.  Life insurance underwriters at some companies may make their best rates available to you, while some others will allow the 2nd or 3rd best rate classes.  An example of a "B" country would be Mexico, Israel, Russia, etc.
  • "C" Countries - Some life insurance companies will limit the rate classes available to you, others may charge you a flat extra.  There are a few life insurance companies that will allow up to 12 weeks per year in a "C" country.  Some examples of "C" countries are Egypt, Thailand, Vietnam, West Bank, etc.
  • "D" Countries - A "D" country is any country not listed on the A,B, or C lists for life insurance companies.  Most life insurance companies will not consider "D" countries except for on a case by case basis.  IF life insurance is available for a "D" country, life insurance companies will limit the amount of life insurance available to you.

Please note that countries change from the A,B,C, D lists all the time.  State department warnings may affect coverage availability, as well as the regulations for the state you reside in.

If you travel to multiple countries, the guidelines for the riskiest destination are used to determine your life insurance rates.
