Early detection of colon cancer is key in making life insurance availble to you. Stage 1 colon cancer and Stage 2 colon cancer are usually insurable with a number of life insurance companies after the completion of treatment and possibly a postpone period. Later stage colon cancers are uninsurable with most life insurance companies, or may only be available after a significant postpone period.
Colon Cancer Life Insurance Underwriting Overview:
Colon cancer is classified according to a cancer staging system. You may have heard the term Duke's Colon Cancer Staging used to describe your colon cancer, or your colon cancer may have been classified using the TNM cancer staging system. Duke's Colon Cancer staging would be classified using letters such as Duke's Stage "A" colon cancer, Duke's Stage "B" colon cancer, or Duke's Stage "C" colon cancer. The TNM cancer staging system will indicate the extent of your colon cancer using a Stage 1 colon cancer, stage 2 colon cancer, stage 3 colon cancer, and stage 4 colon cancer staging system. Generally speaking, life insurance companies will look at Stage 1, 2, A, B cancers. When it comes to Stage 3, C cancers, most life insurance companies will decline to offer life insurance, or if they do make life insurance available to you, it will only be after a significant period of years has passed since you were diagnosed as cancer free. Stage 4, D cancers are not insurable. Colon Cancer Early Detection and Colon Cancer Diagnosis: Some of the most common risk factors for developing colorectal cancer are family history, ulcerative colitis history, Crohn's disease history, colon polyps, diet, and your age. The colon consists of the mucosa layer, submucosa layer, muscularis layer, and the serosa layer. The staging of your colon cancer is dependent on which layers of your colon that the cancer has reached. Our focus is on colon cancers were Stage 0 (cancer in Situ), or were either Stage 1, Stage "A", Stage 2, or Stage "B" colon cancers. Stage 0 - Cancer in Situ - This is the earliest stage of colon cancer where abnormal cancer cells are found in the innermost lining or mucosa layer of your colon. These abnormal cells may become cancerous. Stage 1 Colon Cancer - Also known as Duke's Stage "A" colon cancer - In Stage 1 colon cancers, the colon cancer has spread beyond the innermost layer of your colon to the middle layers of your colon wall. With "A" stage colon cancers, the colon cancer does not spread beyond the submucosa layer, and no lymph nodes are involved. Stage 2 Colon Cancer - Also known as Duke's Stage "B" colon cancer - In Stage 2 colon cancers, the colon cancer has spread beyond the middle layers of your colon wall. Stage 2 colon cancers are further broken down to colon cancer that has spread to nearby tissue, vs. stage 2 colon cancer that has spread to other organs. With B1 stage colon cancer, the colon cancer has penetrated through the submucosa layer and has reached the muscularis layer of the colon. With B2 stage colon cancer, the colon cancer has penetrated through the colon wall and has reached the serosa layer. No lymph nodes are involved in Stage 2 or "B" stage colon cancers. Colon Cancer Life Insurance Underwriting - What to Expect: Impaired risk life insurance companies classify you depending on whether your colon cancer was diagnosed at age 65 and above or prior to age 65. All life insurance rates assume that you have completed your colon cancer treatment and are now cancer free, and that there are no other significant health issues. Stage 0 - Cancer in Situ: Diagnosis before age 65 - Life insurance companies will assign a flat extra cost on top of the standard life insurance rate. This flat extra would typically last for 3-5 years and and cost you an additional $5 - $7.50 per every thousand dollars of life insurance you need. Click here for more Flat Extra Information. Diagnosis After Age 65 - Standard life insurance rates may be available to you. Stage 1 Colon Cancer - Also known as Duke's Stage "A" colon cancer or B1 Colon Cancer: Diagnosis prior to 65 - typically you would be postponed for the 1st year after completion of colon cancer treatment. Life insurance companies would then add a flat extra to the standard rate. The flat extra would generally be $7.50 - $10 per thousand dollars of coverage and would last for 5 years in most cases. After the 5th year, the flat extra drops off and you would pay the standard rate for the duration of your life insurance coverage. Diagnosis after 65 - Life insurance companies will assign a flat extra cost on top of the standard life insurance rate. This flat extra would typically last for 3-5 years and and cost you an additional $5 - $7.50 per every thousand dollars of life insurance you need. Stage 2 Colon Cancer - Also known as Duke's Stage "B2" colon cancer: With Stage 2 or B2 colon cancers, life insurance underwriting becomes much more difficult. There are a number of impaired risk life insurance companies available that may consider you. Diagnosis Prior to Age 65 - Most life insurance companies will decline you for a period of 5 years after completion of colon cancer treatment. At the end of 5 years, the life insurance companies may consider you for coverage, but will add a significant flat extra in the $10 per thousand range. The flat extra would last about 10 years before dropping off. Diagnosis after Age 65 - Most impaired risk life insurance companies will decline you for 2-3 years, and then apply a flat extra of approximately $10 per thousand for a period of 7-10 years.
