Aortic Stenosis:

With aortic stenosis, your aortic valve thickens and does not open properly.  The result is that your left ventricle has to work harder to push blood through the valve.

There are a number of reasons why aortic stenosis occurs, some of the most common reasons why are:

  • Congenital Heart Conditions
  • History of Rheumatic Fever
  • Calcification of aortic valve

Can I Get Life Insurance with Aortic Stenosis?

The answer for most people is "Yes".

The key to stenosis life insurance underwriting is to work with an impaired risk life insurance expert...someone who understands your condition and knows which life insurance company will be best based on your specific heart issue.

Every life insurance company has its own set of underwriting requirements, and not every life insurance company is the same.

What Should I Know About Stenosis Underwriting?

Aortic Stenosis is classified as one of the following categories:

  • Trace or Trivial or Minimal Aortic Stenosis
  • Mild Aortic Stenosis
  • Moderate Aortic Stenosis
  • Severe Aortic Stenosis

Your aortic stenosis calssification is determined by your valve pressure between your aorta and left ventricle.  This is also called your Gradient and is determined via either an estimate using an echocardiogram or by a more accurate method of measuring using a cardiac catheterization.

Your Gradient combined with the grade of any heart murmur, and any other heart conditions that may be present will determine if you have Trace, mild, moderate or severe aortic stenosis.  Your medical records will indicate which class you have.

Your aortic stenosis classification combined with your current age, age at time of diagnosis will determine what life insurance rate classes may be available to you.

What to Expect from Life Insurance with Aortic Stenosis:

Trace Aortic Stenosis - For many people, standard life insurance rates will be available, especially if you are over age 60.  For younger insureds, you may see a standard rate plus an additional table rating.  Typically you would see a table 2 rating, or 50% increase over standard rates.

Mild Aortic Stenosis - If you are currently age 60 or older, it may be possible to get standard life insurance rates with some table shave programs, or a low table rating.  A typical table rating for mild aortic stenosis would be a table 2 - table 3 range...50% - 75% markup over standard rates.  For younger insureds, you may be looking at a table 3 to table 4 range..75% - 100% increase over standard life rates.

Moderate Aortic Stenosis - For age 60 and above, it may be possible to get a table 2 - table 3 range.  For younger insureds, you may face a decline or a high table rating of table 4 or more.

Severe Aortic Stenosis - Severe aortic stenosis is a decline for the majority of life insurance cases but is worth a discussion with us to see what if any options exist.
